Nutrition in Pregnancy
Nutrition in pregnancy often remains a hidden curriculum in the training of doctors, midwives, and healthcare providers. Ensuring a balanced diet and meeting essential nutrient requirements is crucial for optimal fetal growth and a healthy mother. In routine pregnancies, healthcare professionals must possess comprehensive knowledge and effective counselling skills to address the nutritional needs of both the mother and fetus.
OBJECTIVES
By the end of this seminar, participants will be able:
- Discuss the overall nutritional needs of a pregnant woman.
- Identify the nutritional challenges of various conditions in pregnancy such as obesity, anemia, diabetes, and hyperemesis gravidarum.
- Develop strategies to tackle conditions such as obesity, anemia, diabetes and hyperemesis gravidarum in pregnancy to ensure optimal nutritional outcome.
- Develop a comprehensive postpartum care.

- Topic: Nutrition in an uncomplicated pregnancy: optimising nutrition for optimal foetal development.
To give an overview of the general nutritional requirements for pregnancy and its impact on foetal development. Includes macro and micronutrient requirements, caloric requirements, strategies to educate pregnant mothers. - Topic: Meal planning for pregnancy.
To discuss the benefits of ideal meal plans for each trimester. This would include the macro and micronutrients and caloric intake with each meal. - Topic: Managing weight and nutrition-related concerns in pregnancy.
To discuss the risks of obesity in pregnancy and the requirements for macro- and micro-nutrients. To discuss strategies on maintaining a healthy gestational weight gain and the role of exercise. Pre-pregnancy care strategies to aid obese women in optimising their weight prior to embarking on a pregnancy. - Topic: An approach to anemia in pregnancy.
To outline the management of anemia in pregnancy with a focus on the management of iron-deficiency anemia. To discuss the different routes of iron administration and their efficacy. - Topic: The role of micronutrient supplementation and pregnancy outcomes.
To discuss the role of micronutrients such as folic acid, calcium, vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids in pregnancy and the foetal outcomes associated with supplementation. - Topic: Nutritional needs and medications for nausea and vomiting in pregnancy.
Discuss the impact of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy. Highlight the role of healthcare professionals in tailoring nutrition plans to individual needs and the collaboration between healthcare providers in developing coping strategies. - Topic: Nutrition in gestational diabetes mellitus
Emphasise the critical role of nutrition in managing blood sugar levels during pregnancy. Basic principles of a balanced diet: highlight the importance of a balanced diet for overall health during pregnancy. Discuss the key nutrients needed for both the mother and baby.
Carbohydrate management: explain the concept of glycemic index/load. Provide guidelines for monitoring and regulating carbohydrate intake. - Topic: Postpartum nutrition and beyond
To discuss the nutritional requirements of a postpartum nursing mother and its importance in contributing to her recovery mentally, physically, and emotionally. Highlight the caloric needs as well as macro and micronutrient requirements of a nursing mother to aid in breastmilk production.

Cancellation Policy
- Any cancellation of registration must be made in writing to the secretariat of NUTRITION IN PREGNANCY.
- There will be a 50% refund of registration fee for cancellation made before 31 May 2024.
- There will be a 30% refund of registration fee for cancellation made before 14 June 2024.
- There will be no refund of registration fee for cancellations made after 14 June 2024.
- The organiser reserves the right to cancel or change the topic or trainer of the workshop/seminar, if for whatever reasons beyond its control, the workshop/seminar cannot be held as scheduled or the topics need to be altered.
