IOTN: Embrace Orthodontic Case Referral Skills

In Malaysia, the high demand for subsidized orthodontic treatment in government orthodontic clinics has resulted in long waiting lists for orthodontic treatment. Therefore, prioritization and selective eligibility for orthodontic treatment are needed for equitable delivery of orthodontic care to the large pool of patients. Individuals requiring orthodontic treatment are screened using Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) for level of severity of malocclusion and subsequent urgency to receive orthodontic treatment.
IOTN assesses need for orthodontic treatment based on Dental Health Component (DHC) and Aesthetic Component (AC). Competency in appropriate referrals will reduce redundancy and improve equity in treatment services. This CPD programme aims to train the participants on how to utilise IOTN correctly to reinforce accurate orthodontic patient referrals.
OBJECTIVES
- Analyse the scope, importance and limitations of IOTN in orthodontic patient-referral practice.
- Discuss different components of IOTN to categorise the level of needs of orthodontic patients.
- Apply various parameters of DHC and AC of IOTN for grading orthodontic patients as per the severity of malocclusion.
- Perform appropriate use of ‘IOTN Ruler’ to quantify the malocclusion.
