This course covers the theory and practical aspects of basic care of the elderly needed for a caregiver to confidently provide safe care to the elderly including:
- Nursing care: Personal hygiene, transferring and positioning, eliminating, feeding, monitoring of vital signs, exercises and safety.
- Nutrition: Oral factors affecting normal ingestion and digestion of food and preparation of meals.
By end of the session, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate procedures related to basic care of the elderly i.e., personal hygiene, transferring, mobility and elimination feeding, medication administration, simple exercises to the elderly, and prevention of infection.
- Identify oral factors affecting normal ingestion and digestion of food and beverages.
- Recognise physical signs of nutrient deficiencies.
