Assessment is the process of making a judgment on whether the learning outcomes are achieved through a systematic collection, review and use of information. An effective assessment system will enhance learning, and can provide feedback to the teachers for instructional improvement. Assessments are also valid indicators of learner performance in the competency areas intended in the programme.

The efficiency and effectiveness of assessments can be limited by operational challenges, such as inadequate assessment blueprinting during item development, long results processing time and tedious manual psychometric analysis, which consequently affect the quality of feedback (i.e. timeliness, specificity). An online assessment system that is reliable, secure, valid, and can cater for a range of assessment tools including workplace based assessment provides practical solutions to the limitations mentioned above. Assessments also need evidence based decision making and cannot be isolated from the impact of big Data and learning analytics. Online assessments provide a synchronised path towards evidence based decision making.

In this workshop based on technology powered solutions, assessments are taken to the next level of best practices which is online assessments. The development approaches and features for an online assessment system, contextualised to the institutional needs and aligned with the institutional governance system will be discussed. We will share practical tips from our experience in developing an integrated OAS for outcome-based education with a range of assessment tools for health professions education. Participants will be further engaged by working in groups, identifying resources and how to overcome challenges using checklists developed from stakeholders’ perspectives.
