Standard Setting in Assessment of Written (Modified Angoff) and Clinical (Borderline Regression Method) tests

Event Date : 09/11/2017

A standard is a conceptual boundary on the true-score scale between acceptable and non-acceptable performance. There is no consensus on any one method as the ultimate option in standard setting. The most appropriate standard setting procedures are Angoff Method for written test (MCQ) and Borderline Regression Method (BRM) for clinical examination (OSCE). Efforts to implement standard setting (SS) is to improve the quality and transparency of assessment to make it more credible and defensible for logical decisions. There are some global challenges to any standard setting procedures. Current workshop will address those challenges considering the basic key concepts in standard setting in medical education.

Highlights

In medical education a pass score with 50% mark cannot be justified to declare an assessment dependable and credible for discriminating between good and poor performing students. To consider options for a better logical decision, standard setting is a way forward.

Objectives

  • To define the common standard setting methods practiced in medical education.
  • To perform the Modified Angoff procedure for written assessment in MCQ (OBA).
  • To perform the borderline regression method (BRM) for clinical assessment (OSCE).
  • To calculate the reliability of BRM with Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) in Excel.
  • To compare the reliability of BRM with Cronbach’s alpha versus MRSE in Excel.

Who Should Attend?

The workshop has been designed to discuss theory and to demonstrate procedures by academics in health professions education interested in standard setting methods from medical, dental, pharmacy, nursing as well as academic administrators and support staff.
